Robert Smith is introduced to us at the beginning of the story. In chapter one of "Song of Solomon" we learn that Robert Smith is an insurance salesman and a member of the Seven Days. He is a man who really demonstrates one of the ongoing themes of this novel which is the idea of flying or flight. Robert has “wide blue silk wings” and goes to the top of Mercy hospital and jumps to his death because he believes he can really fly.
Robert Smith died as a result of wanting freedom. Flying to him was freedom so he put on blue silk wings and tried to take off. He jumped from a building but soon met the ground.
