The Muslims and Hindus related to each other during the period of Muslim rule of India 400 years ago borrowing from each other. Some Muslim rulers saw that the Indian idea of divine kingship was alluring. Hindu rajas learned by harsh experience the superiority of cavalry mounted on horses instead of elephants, the primary assault weapon in early India. Some upper-class Hindu males were attracted to the Muslim tradition of purdah and began to keep their women in seclusion from everyday society.
