The California-based band called Aquabats is a rather quirky group of eight or so men who gained respect from contemporary rockers

for an energized new wave of ska-punk.

Such contemporaries as Courtney Love and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones praised the group's musical stylings.

The leader of the group, known as the "Bat Commander," is vocalist Christian Jacobs.

As evidence of their zany antics, each of the album covers depicted the Aquabat members as a different Batman (circa 1960s television series) nemesis. The group's instrumentalists were plentiful, and they all had rather kooky names, such as Jaime the Robot, The Prince of Karate, Prince Adam, Crash McLarson, the Baron Von Tito, Ultra Kyu, and Catboy.

The band released several albums in the mid-'90s and then a great turnover of talent began. The group released several more albums before going on a six-year hiatus. When the group re-emerged in 2005, the Aquabats only had five members, and only two of them were part of the original group. Their music also evolved into a more new-wave rock group.

Musically, the contribution The Aquabats made to music was reviving the ska-punk movement in the United States. The more memorable contribution, perhaps, is the showmanship they brought to their musical experiences.

Easily identified by their masks and matching costumes, The Aquabats are perhaps most recognized for their comedic persona in which they claim to be crime-fighting superheroes.

Their music matched their physical personas, and their concerts were more like theatrical performances, including fight scenes, stunts, and costumed characters (such as villains and monsters). At one point, the band made a pilot for a television comedy series featuring The Aquabats, but it never aired.

Currently the band plays music that combines elements of rock, new wave, punk rock, synthpop, and ska.

The Aquabats! is a group comprised of 5 people with very unique stage names including The MC Bat Commander, Jimmy the Robot, Ricky Fitness and others. They even assigned each other their own special powers. They consider themselves," The first musical, crime-fighting supergroup in history." They incorporate animations, live-action adventure and parodies into their music and performances. The genre they fall under is very broad and can be considered," alternative, rock, punk, pop, synthpop, ska, new wave," and they even gave themselves their own genre called Aquabeat.

They have been performing for over 16 years and sold over 270,000 albums. They recently released an album called Hi-Five Soup! They have helped add an element of fun, excitement, and comedy into music.
