How can trust be established and maintained?

For trust to be established, and then maintained, an open line of communication should exist. An open line of communication would allow for people to speak freely about what ever is important to them individually. For an open line of communication to work, the people involved must work together to keep it open.
A social contract comes to mind. The people elect a representative (a president, for example) with the understanding that the representative will work for the people, and for the good of the people.
These ideas could be partly why many people have respected and have admired the founders of the United States so much. Many of the founders, such as Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin, were trusted by the people, so it was up to them to create a way for our new nation to continue into the future.
The founders understood that an open but concrete form of communication was permanently needed. This is partly why the founders created documents such as The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.
