How can I pour 4 gallons of water into a 5 gallon jug (there are no markings in the jug and I have an unlimited supply of water)? Please help me explain this step by step. The explanation says a popular movie featured this problem. I didn't watch this so could you help me and we whether the characters eventually figured this out?

Fill the 5 gallons jug and then pour the 5 gallons of water into a four gallons jug. The 4 gallons left are thrown.

Pour 1 gallon from the 5 gallons jug into the 4 gallons jug. You need 3 gallons more to fill the 4 gallons jug.

Fill again the 5 gallons jug and pour 3 gallons to complete the 4 gallons jug.

There are left 2 gallons of water.
