How can I adapt my educational program to accommodate and support learners with emotional problems?

This question is one all teachers must face in today's schools. To adapt curriculum for learners with emotional problems, first find out as much as you can about the learners you have this year. Giving them assignments in small pieces with deadlines helps with frustration. Showing them how the small pieces will eventually fit together shows them where you are going and what they need to learn in each assignment. The big picture gives them the why of each assignment making them more able to tolerate the requirements. Adapting how they present work also helps as many want a small audience which can be done before school. Watching for signs of stress can be the signal for the whole class to stretch and recite 3 items they learned that day. The biggest issue is to stay aware of all students to eliminate teasing or bullying and keep students safely under control. Parental contact early in the year with a positive phone call pays huge dividends if it is for a real reason and not just to curry favor. Giving them quiet students around them or allowing them to stand in the back of the room if they are appropriate can save the day. Expect them to do the work assigned even if you have modified their length, deal calmly and fairly, and most of the time, it works.
