Kevin had no illusions about his size or twisted body. With his braces and crutches, he knew he resembled something mechanical or other-worldly. So, he pretended to be a robot,

... making these weird robot noises... Rrrr... rrrr..." (Chapter 1)

Kevin was hopeful that his fragile body could be repaired, and he never gave up on his story that he would be the next bionic man. Max knew that "Freak was hooked on robots"--that he had a fascination with the mechanical man that he imagined he might one day become. Freak even dresses as Darth Vader on his purse-recovering adventure with Max, and "robotics" is one of the words he leaves behind for Max in "Freak's Dictionary."
