Well, to repeat a cliche which I'm sure you've heard many times, it's in order to prevent repeating the mistakes of the past.  While this might sound a bit unrealistic, it does make sense if you really think about it.  If you were going to open a new restaurant, wouldn't it be at least somewhat wise to look into the reasons why successful restaurants were still around, while others failed quickly?

This doesn't have to be purely political or military in nature, although so much of today's history classes focuses on such areas.  Most businesses do a bit of research before opening up a new location or offering a new product.  Before introducing a brand new SUV, Ford might conduct some surveys to see what customers are looking for, or why they didn't buy a previously unsuccessful model.

There are many reasons why history can be beneficial.  I hope this opened up your mind to the overall benefit of looking to the past for help with the future...

We learn history to benefit from the knowledge of what is happened in the past.

What has happened in the past helps us to understand better the likely impact of actions of individuals and societies. Thus it can be great help in guiding our actions and decisions.

Many times history also helps us the understand the roots of current events and situations and see the things in their proper perspective. For example, some communities in a country may have remained backward because of lack of opportunities and atrocities committed on them in past. This knowledge will help us to understand that their backwardness is not a because of their inherent inferiority but because wrong doings of others. Such knowledge can promote better relation between different communities and promote overall development of the country.

We learn history so that we can study choices people made from earlier times.  Then, we can see the results of of those choices and how it worked out for them. Then we can decide if we want to make the same choices and accept the consequences, or make new choices and experience the unknown.

Our kwoledge is the history of our actions and experience. In a similar way the history is what all is done our generations  in the remote past. The study of history is essential because it is the knowledge of us , the makind. It is the knowledge our society and its culture.

It enables us to correct ourselves from the past.It shows us the light to lead our way.In fact the structure of our government, the political development has its roots in our history.History is a record of achievements of mankind and how it lived. We can never forget our past, at least our achievements , pains  and those moments of feelings.

The more we know about the past, the better we can plan for the future.  This is the positive version of "Those who fail to understand history are condemned to repeat it."  A careful analysis of causes and consequences will lead to wisdom.
