A lost civilization is one that no longer exists and whose disappearance has no clearly understood cause.  This is different from a civilization like that of Egypt, for example, whose disappearance is well understood.

Two good examples of such civilizations come from ancient Greece.  These are the Minoan civilization and the Mycenaean civilization.  In both cases, we are not completely sure why they collapsed.  People suggest that environmental problems or natural disasters could have caused the collapse, but there is no definitive evidence.  This sort of mystery is what leads to a civilization being called “lost.”
