Lets start with the current time and assume that the remaining minutes equal m

then the current time is 5:00 - m

now forty minutes ago......

             5:00 - m - 40 = 4m + 2:00

              4:20 -m = 4m + 2:00

               4:20 - 2:00 = 5m

                         2:20 = 5m        now, 1 hour = 60 minutes.

 then,                 140 = 5m

 then,               m = 140/5 = 28 minutes

the time is 28 mimnutes till 5

hope that helps.....

Let name the starting time, x

5:00 - 40 minutes - x=  4x + 2:00

4:20-x= 4x+2:00

4x+x = 4:20 - 2:00

5x = 2:20

Now, convert 2:20 into minutes, which is actually two hours and 20 minutes. 1 hour= 60 minutes, so 2*60+20= 140 minutes

5x=140 minutes

x= 28 minutes

So, it is 28 minutes until 5:00, which is 4:32 am/pm
