A group of 35 students 's pulse rates were recorded in beats per minute ( abbreviated to 'bpm') before and after running in place for one minute.You are asked to consider the relationship between the pulse rates for students before and after running. We obtain a scatterplot,using 'Before' as the explanatory variable.

The lowest pulse rate of a student after running was 58 bpm. The pulse rate for this student before running was 62 bpm. Using the model:

y = 18.4707 + 1.00603 x

( This is the regression line )

calculate the residual for this student to the nearest whole number of bpm. Please explain your answer.

The group of 35 students's pulse rates were recorded in beats per minute before and after running in place for one minute. The two were recorded as a scatterplot with the value before running being the independent variable and the value after running being the dependent variable.

The regression line is found to be represented by y = 18.4707 + 1.00603x.

A student had a pulse rate of 62 bpm before running and 58 bpm after running. According to the regression line, the value of y that corresponds to x = 62 is 80.84456 `~~` 81. But the actual beats per minute of the student is 58. The residual in this case is 58 - 81 = -23

The required residual is -23.
