Reflecting on Gatsby, his ambitions and his realities, with the advantage of two years hindsight, Nick comes to the conclusion that Gatsby was a hopeless dreamer, basically a good man caught up in circumstances beyond his control. His dreams for the future, for the perfect life with the perfect Daisy, ignored the reality of the corruption of the East and Daisy's shallowness. Because Gatsby was able to simply block out factors that might complicate reaching the goals he set for himself, he never had to concede that those goals were unreachable. Nick could not adopt the same attitude toward life for himself, but he came to understand that it was the only way Gatsby could carry on with his life.
his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city
*hopeless love sick soldier
*unable to forget the past and move on
*although nick did not approve of his actions and the illegal way he earned his money but nick still admired him for beind so determined and in love with daisy that he'd do anything for her. as it is mentioned in the very beginning of the book "then wear the gold hat,if that will move her/ if u can bounce high, bounce for her too..... basically it means do whatever u can to impress your lover and get her back and that is exactly wht gatsby does.
*eventhough wrong nick thought that still better than the entire lot put together. (daisy tom jordan)
