The song suggests that people listen to the television and do what it says, and that television is not a good example for society.

The song mentions several examples of society not working right because people do not care.  Specifically, the television tells people what to think and feel, and may lead them to behave inappropriately.

Turn on the boob tube
I'm in the mood to obey
So lead me astray by the way, now

Whether or not the television really tells us what to do, as in the song, there is no doubt that we let it into our lives daily, and it does influence us.  All of the negative aspects of society are depicted on television, sometimes glamorized.  Whether it’s news or drama, we are still letting these ideas into our heads.
