Given a muriatic acid with a concentration of 11.7 M, write the procedures for diluting the concentrated acid to make 3 gallons of 2.5 M acid.

(1 gal = 4 qt, 1 qt = 0.946 L)

Given

Molarity of Muriatic acid `M_1` `= 11.7 M`

Volume of Muriatic acid `V_1 = ?`

Final Molarity `M_2 = 2.5 M`

Final volume `V_2 = 3 gal = 11.3562 litres.`

According to formula of dilution

`M_1V_1 = M_2V_2`

`V_1 = (M_2V_2)/(M_1)`

`V_1 = (2.5 * 11.3562)/11.7`

`V_1 =2.4265litres =0.64101 gallons.`

When we add 2.4265 litres (0.64101 gallons) of Muriatic acid to 8.9297 litres (2.3589 gallons) of water to make 11.3562 litres (3 gallons) of 2.5 M acid solution.
