PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)___________ PCl5(g)Delta H= -92.5 KJ

 

 

 

predict the effect on the position of the equilibrium that results from

a)increasing the total pressure by decreasing volume.

b)injecting more Cl2 gas without changing the volume.

c)increasing the temperature.

d)increasin the volume of the container.

e)adding a catalyst.

pl explain why change occurs.

(a) Pressure increases implies that the volume decreases, which implies that the n/v value of the system increases. Thus, by Le Chatelier's Principle, the system would prefer the reaction resulting in the number of moles per unit volume to be lower, which in this case is the forward reaction. Thus, as the pressure decreases, the forward reaction is favoured. Kc remains constant

(b) Forward reaction would be favored (not too sure)

(c) Will favour the endothermic reaction i.e backward reaction

(d) n/v decreases => Backward Reaction is favored

(e) Unaffected as it increases the rate of both reactions equally
