For Ingraham v. Wright, what was the decision of the supreme court? How did they come to this decision?

The Court was presented with the question whether corporal punishment was "cruel and unusual" under the 8th Amendment. It was based on a case in Florida where students were paddled for misbehaving at school.
This was a 5-4 decision where the Court determined that the 8th Amendment only applied to criminal proceedings, and not to the academic environment. I
t is important to make note of the 5-4 split, as this type of case could easier be presented to the Court again with perhaps a different outcome.
