A cloud is at a potential 8.0x10^6 V relative to the ground. A charge of 40 C is transferred in a lightning stroke between the cloud and the ground. Find the energy dissipated.

The energy dissipated in moving a charge Q between a potential difference V is equal to E = Q*V

Here the cloud is at a potential 8*10^6 V relative to the ground. A charge of 40 C is transferred in the lightning strike from the cloud to the ground.

The energy dissipated is equal to 8*10^6*40 = 3.2*10^8 J
