Find the distance between the points (24,-14) and (12,-16). Give and exact answer and an approximation to three decimal places?

The distance between any two points `A(x_1, y_1)` and `B(x_2, y_2)` is given by the distance formula `D = sqrt((x_2- x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2)`

The distance between the points (24,-14) and (12,-16) is:

D = `sqrt((24 - 12)^2 + (-14 + 16)^2)`

= `sqrt(12^2 + 2^2)`

= `sqrt(144 +4)`

= `sqrt(148)`

= `2*sqrt 37`

`~~ 12.166`

The distance between the points (24,-14) and (12,-16) is `2*sqrt 37` or approximately 12.166.
