Favorite Character in Midsummer Night's Dream

Who is your favorite character? Puck has the single best line in the play, but overall Bottom is my favorite-- he's foolishly insightful and funny, and by far the most interesting mortal.

Why the supernatural is let enter into the problems of mankind? Are they more sympathetic?

Puck is my favourite character. He is the agent who commits mistake

and afterward corrects it.His funny action with house wife and all actions add

a great fun and importance to this romantic comedy. without him drama must have

been boring.

A good question. For Shakespeare's time, I'd have to say that it wasn't a matter of the supernatural entering in to these problems, but rather that the mortal was always already influenced by supernatural powers, at least in large things. In this Shakespeare, otherwise a very Renaissance writer, shows traces of an older era. The king was king by the will of god; upheaval in the heavens forecast upheaval in human society, and so on.

My favorite character? The fairie triad: Puck, Titania, and Oberon. T & O are so willful, so emotionally rich, and so powerful. Their speeches are fantastic, from Oberon's opening line on. And then Puck, of course, is the greatest little trickster.

This is an interesting thread to read, particularly after reading Jamie's question in another post concerning whether the lovers are a great deal alike, and if so, why.  I jumped onto this thread in order to cast my vote for Puck - GREAT character - and it occurred to me that not one of the mortals even crossed my plate when I was considering this question, although Bottom is hilarious, too, especially when played well.

At any rate, I think most people remember the fairies and their delightful world in the woods, rather than the hysterical lovers and their dull Athenian authority figures.  The fairies are what make this play come alive!

Nary a single vote for either Hermia or Helena?  Two poor girls caught in the middle of something they absolutely cannot comprehend.  Hermia's natural reaction is to plead confusion and cry a ton; Helena wishes to yell and fight her way into knowing what's going on.  I love it - classic collateral damage.  Some of the best suspense of the play was waiting to see what would happen first: Hermia crying home to daddy, or Helena taking a swipe at somebody!

Perhaps it's being reminded a bit too perfectly what adolescent/college "romances" were like - and how I probably acted quite a bit like these two poor girls at various times in my life...ACK! :)

Shakespeare at his best - "To hold the mirror up to Nature" (Hamlet)! :)

My favorite character is Helena. I love Puck, also. He is such a complex, amazing character. Helena is just crazy to me, and I love her way of thinking, how she believes 'Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind' she really is just a beautiful character, to me.
