I assume you mean classes in which students are given extra help. I am absolutely in favor of this although it is very difficult for most schools to offer these things. Such classes cost money and it is likely to be impossible for many school districts to offer them.
Yes, I think that extra classes can be a great help to students who need a little extra time to master a concept, or who need to have it presented in a different way. The end goal of schooling is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to have a successful life; if extra sessions can make that happen, that is a great thing.
Extra coaching classes should be available for students who need that extra help. As a teacher, I wish I could work more one on one. It is so needed, especially in my writing class. Students need that extra feedback. I do try to offer individual feedback when students write essays. It is the most productive type of teaching.

Yes, there are different categories of students. I found a student who is not interested to read his lessons of his own but he remembers and understand everything when someone read out to him. Thus he prepare for his examination. Now he cannot get the same care in school and so he need a teacher at home. Besides, in a class, a teacher cannot give extra care to one student. Out of them one may more talented and he is inquisitive to know more about the lesson or subject. He can also have the chance to know from a home tutor. On the other hand, all teachers in a scholl may not have all fundas clear and unable to teach well. But there are some teachers who are specialised in some area. His coaching to a students help much. One of the students of my school secured hardly 20 marks up to pre final examination in mathematics. He took coaching for one month and he secured 90 marks in final examination. It means the teacher who taught in the school was effective to him.
Extra classes do help as mentioned by Bhawanipur in post 8, however in Pakistan, and may be in India, Nepal & Bhutan etc as well, it has given rise to unfair practices. I know that some teachers do not concentrate on teaching in the class so that the students are forced to come to them for extra coaching classes - of course for extra payment. It has both pros and cons.
Most schools would love to offer more coaching classes. They simply do not have the money for such courses. Many teachers are already teaching more classes than they should (for instance, teaching during their planning period) just to have enough core classes for students to take. Many classes are already overcrowded because schools cannot afford to hire more teachers. While I'd love to see more coaching classes, I doubt it will happen for most schools.
Extra classes are a definite benefit to students because the lessons are tailored specifically to the needs of that student. This is also likely why students prefer them. They are not lost in a crowd and their needs are being paid attention to and more likely met. Extra classes often offer students help that allows them greater success during regular classes and boosts their confidence.
The problem is the lack of availabilty for this kind of extra help to everyone. Every student deserves an equal chance to get one on one or small group attention, but as mentioned above there is not the money or staffing to supply this to every student who wants or needs it. It does give students who have acces to these extra classes an unfair advantage. It is especially unfair when these classes are only available by payment, automatically excluding anyone in a lower socioeconomic group.
