Philosophy is an important aspect of the liberal arts education because of its connection with critical thinking. The first important branch of philosophy is logic. Logic is the science which enables you to analyze the degree to which a conclusion follows from premises and to spot fallacies. Thus logic, as the art of reasoning, is crucial to applications of reason to all other subjects and is a fundamental organon for both academic, political, and everyday life.

Another important area of philosophy is ethics. Although everyone has moral beliefs, often they are not thought through in detail. Philosophy provides methods for analysis of moral belief structures and also for seeing if given statements or acts conform to general moral systems.
