It is difficult to give a completely satisfactory definition of term hibernation. The word hibernation (from Latin hiberna-winter) is sometimes used to designate an over-wintering, inactive stage of poikilothermic animals such as the insects and snails, etc. The hibernation of homeothermic animals may be defined as a state or a torpid condition in which the body temperature is greatly decreased and the metabolism, respiration, heart rate, etc., are considerably reduced. Thus, the state of hibernation allows the animal to remain dormant during the winter when the food is less readily available.
