Act 1 scene three opens with the three witches speaking about what they have been doing. Then, Macbeth and Banquo enter and the three witches tell them their prophesies. They tell Macbeth that he is to be Thane of Cawdor and King, and they tell Banquo that his children will be King. The witches then vanish while Banquo and Macbeth discuss what the witches could possibly mean. Soon, a messenger enters to tell Macbeth that he has been made Thane of Cawdor, the first part of the prophesy coming true.
