In the era of global terrorism, can the United States remain a free and democratic society as envisioned by the Founding Fathers?

I think it's hard to imagine what the founding fathers expected from the future. In so many ways, their societies were completely different from ours. How could they predict a religious fundamentalist would hijack an airplane and crash it into a high-rise. They didn't have the technology. However, they did have ideals that we should still follow. We need to find a way to keep our people safe without compromising until we have nothing left.
