In Chapter 14 of "Ellen Foster," Ellen had had to move into her aunt's house because her grandmother has died. She decides that she will just pretend it is a "hotel room" and she stay in her room almost all the time. When Dora and Nadine ask her what she is doing in her room all the time she tells them she is "reading". They ask what she is reading and she tells them that she is getting ahead for school. She tells them that school is beginning soon and that she wants to get ahead.
