Does the setting in A Christmas Memory provide any conflict for the main character?

The story is set in the rural South, during the Great Depression. Buddy lives in a house that is overcrowded with relatives, but no parents.

Yet, Buddy is young and his memories are more sentimental in nature, rather than realistic. The memories of making fruitcake  evoke thoughts of Christmas. The season evokes warm and happy emotions within most people, but the true setting which Buddy inhabits is contrary to his tale. Buddy's memories are in contrast to the history of the time.
