My favorite quote about Atticus's reputation comes from Miss Maudie, who tells Jem that "there are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father's one of them."  (Chapter 22) Also, from Miss Maudie, concerning the length of time that the jury deliberated, "he's the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that."  (Chapter 22)

one quote that i really like is when atticus states "the one thing that doesnt abide by majority rule is a persons conscience"....that shows that atticus is a man of his word and is not easliy persueded by others.........the other good quote was when atticus said (something to the effect) there comes a time in every lawyers life were he will take on a case that he won't win but it would be the right thing to do

A quote I like is from Miss Maudie “If Atticus Finch drank until he was drunk he wouldn’t be as hard as some men are at their best” (p. 46).   This shows Atticus’s strength and compassion, and how the town looks up to him.  Atticus is well-respected and important.  He is the town’s moral conscience.

A quote that I think shows his reputation is "in spite of Atticus's shortcomings as a parent, people were content to re-elect him to the state legislature...without opposition."

Atticus made Scout and Jem read to Mrs. Dubose each day as she was trying to overcome a morphine addiction and explained to them later why he had done so:

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.

Miss Maudie also says that Atticus Finch is the same behind the doors of his home as he is on the public streets. In other words, he is a man of integrity.

She also says that he is "civilized in his heart" and this is part of the reason he gives up hunting and shooting, despite his proficiency in this area.
