I suggest taking the melody and changing it. Some ways to change the melody could be to add riffs, play small scales, and/or change some notes.
One of the most important things is to loosen up and really get into the music. Then you can play at your house just goofing off with a song and you will hear what works and what doesn't. Dont get hung up if you mess up, just go with it and see where it takes you. You may like what you are doing.
Another thing you could do is record you practice sessions and then you will really know what the audience is hearing. You may get cought up in it and not remember what you did that you liked. Recording will help that.
I have been to many jazz camps that instruct all instruments and also voice. I have gone for voice though. I play the drums, the trumpet, the ukulele, and some piano. I thought you might want to know how I got this information.
