Written as social criticism of Brazil in 1969 (year of publication), Amado's aim was to undermine the platform racism stand on and to expose the inhumanity of racism and racists. It is fair to say, working from the text alone without supporting biographical material, that Amado believes that the changes between 1868 and 1943 (the settings) and 1969 were not significant enough to indicate satisfactory movement away from racial intolerance and racist beliefs.
