How long should a person wait until s/he accepts the idea that wages previously earned may no longer be possible and a "lesser job" may be necessary, and do you think people are less inclined to accept possible job offers while they are receiving unemployment benefits?

This is a completely subjective question. The only possible ways to ferret out an answer to this is to (1) know your own family and financial circumstances and (2) to know exactly what a lesser job might mean pay-wise. If a lesser job than what one was used to will pay the bills and feed and house the family while provide some sort of work and/or school transportation (perhaps not the Mercedes), then accepting a lesser job may be a viable option.
