The gender stereotypes and especially the sexualization of women in the media have negative long term effects on society. Unfortunately, the people most harmed are often the poorest and most vulnerable. The effects of these stereotypes cause young girls to view themselves as valued primarily for their sexual attractiveness, leading not only to physical damage through unhealthy diets but also to early sexual activity leading to teenage pregnancy. Also, girls concerned primarily with attractiveness in a very stereotyped form, in which skill, strength and competence are not considered attractive, are being discouraged implicitly from entering fields like science, math, and engineering and developing important skills for leadership.
