The Distance from a Storm formula, M = 1/5t, can be used to determine how far in miles (M) you are from lightning when its thunder takes t seconds to reach your ears. a) It takes 8 seconds for the sound of thunder to reach you after you have seen lightning. How far away is the storm? b) Solve for t.

a) we use the formula, and we insert our given value of t=8 sec `M=1/5 t->M=1/5xx8=8/5=1 3/5` So the storm is 1 3/5 miles away

b)To solve the equation for t means to get it so that the variable t stands alone. 
All we need to do is separate the 1/5 from the t and connect it to the M.  Since the t is connected to the 1/5 by multiplication (whenever there is no sign, assume multiplication), we can separate it using the opposite operation division.  Then we balance the equation by doing the same thing to the other side of the equation yielding `M-:1/5=t` When you divide any number, including variables, by a fraction you multiply the number by the reciprocal of the fraction so that yields us `5M=t` voila, the equation is solved for t.
