Apparently multi-instrumentalist Herb Pedersen never made an appearance with The Dillards as The Darlings on the old Andy Griffith Show. The Dillards appeared six times on the TV show between 1963-1966. Pedersen did not perform on a Dillard's album until the release of Wheatstraw Suite in 1968 (though he no doubt joined the band at least a few months earlier), replacing founding member Doug Dillard on banjo. Interestingly, Pedersen apparently did not join the other members of The Dillards when they took part in the TV reunion movie Return to Mayberry (1968). Doug Dillard did return to play Doug, along with Rodney Dillard and Mitch Jayne. (Dean Webb, who had been in the original six episodes, is not credited in Return to Mayberry.)
