Determine the average velocity of the following trip.

A particle starts at x=5.0m. 3 seconds later x=12m. 7 seconds later x=-7m

Hello!

 

Average velocity is the displacement (distance travelled) over the change in time (total time taken)  or

delta D/delta T.

It can also be the average of the velocities in a given straight path.

In the problem, we can solve two velocities. 

      |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |                               .   -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1   0  1  2  3   4  5  6   7   8  9  10 1112

V1 = 7m/3s= 2.33 m/s   

**From 5m to 12m it has a displacement of 7 meters.

V2 = 19m/7s = 2.71 m/s

**From 12m to -7 it has a displacement of 19 meters

 

average velocity = (2.333+2.714)/2 = 2.52 m/s
