Why are the various agents of socialization important?
1 Answer | add yours
The agents of socialization are important because they teach us what sorts of behaviors and attitudes are acceptable in our society. By doing so, they do a great deal to shape who we are and what we think. For example, we in the United States believe that democracy and capitalism are superior to other systems. We believe that individual rights are more important than the needs of the community as a whole. We get these ideas largely through socialization. Consciously or not, we are taught these things by our parents, by our teachers, and by other things like the media. Thus, the agents of socialization do a great deal to shape our values.
