Physical fitness is very important to respiratory function. Aerobic exercise causes increased rates of respiration and so helps to cleanse the lungs of bacteria or other agents of infection. Being obese can cause labored breathing, and affect the body's ability to get enough oxygen. Exercise also helps to strengthen the respiratory system, which means when the body must move quickly in an emergency or situation where fast movement is called form, the body will function as needed and shortness of breath will not prevent optimal function. Exercise also benefits blood gases by introducing more oxygen into the blood which also aids respiratory function.
