A periwound is simply the area of skin surrounding a wound. It is just as important to clean this area of the wound as it is to clean the wound itself. There are many different types of wounds so special care should be taken when treating these wounds and the periwound area. This especially applies to venous leg ulcers.
Wounds not properly cared for can result in dermatological problems in the periwound area. Usually the skin in this area is very thin and susceptible to tearing (skin stripping), infection, and allergic reactions. Usually the wound and periwound is cleaned used saline solution and in the same manner.
