Nitrogen fixation is the process of converting nitrogen to compounds that can be absorbed by plants. Nitrogen fixation is essential for life as it nitrogen is the essential element in all the basic building blocks of life such as DNA and amino acids.

Nitrogen fixation takes place in nature in which the atmospheric nitrogen is converted into ammonia through biological princesses. This type of nitrogen fixation is called biological or atmospheric nitrogen fixation. Biological nitrogen fixation takes place with the help of an enzyme called nitrogenase.

Nitrogen fixation is also achieved by industrial chemical processes for manufacture of fertilizers. This type of nitrogen fixation is called industrial or chemical nitrogen fixation.
