How were the states organized during the Revolutionary War period?

During the Revolutionary War the states were organized under The Articles of Confederation. It was necessary for the members of The Second Continental Congress to draft a document which would allow the new nation to be recognized as a sovereign nation by the nations of Europe. The United States would need the financial support of France and in order to recieve that support a written form of government legitimized the loan. The Atricles of Confederation only bound the states together of the purpose of achieving independence from Britain. The states themselves remained sovereign, and acted independently from one another in most other matters. This would become increasingly inefficient after the war which would eventually lead the framers to draft an entirely new document, The United States Constitution.
