The first step in writing any essay is topic. Try brainstorming some ideas. Make sure that the topic you select is an argument and that you have several ideas to share about one side of that argument. An argumentative essay is largely constructed just like any other. Start with an introductory paragraph finished with a thesis statement. Make sure your thesis clearly shows the side of the argument that you are choosing to support. One (or more depending on the length of your essay) body paragraph should show some concessions. You will need to acknowledge and refute the other side of the argument. Think about debating the topic with another person. What would they say to convince you of the other side of the argument? How would you counter their argument? A strong position always acknowledges other view points (although that should be a very small part of your paper). Finish the paper with a concluding paragraph and try to leave the reader with something to think about. See the link below for more step by step directions.
