Planning is a basic function of management. In planning, a manager sets the strategic goals for the organization, determines how best to utilize available resources, and monitors each step in order to ensure that goals are achieved.
A health care manager in an oncology service line may use strategic planning. Through strategic planning, the manager may develop short-term and long-term goals for the service line. For example, the oncology service may decide that more practitioners are needed. As part of the planning process, the manager would conduct an evaluation.
The planning function enhances the role of the health care manager. The manager creates a vision for the organization or department, analyzes potential strategies, formulates strategies, creates an action plan, and addresses any challenges present. These activities are crucial to the growth and development of the health care organization.
