To contrast these two systems, think about the fact that Louis XIV reigned over France as an abosolute monarch while, at one point in this time period, the Glorious Revolution was happening in England. This shows that, even though both countries had a monarchy and a parliament, they were very different.
In England, the nobles and later the people in general had been cutting away at royal prerogatives since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. This same process did not happen to anywhere near the same extent in France. This led to a situation in which the French had an absolute monarchy while the English had more of a constitutional monarchy with limits on the power of the monarch.
