This is an exceedingly broad question. There are some helpful things that are taking place and some not helpful things. Let me name a few things.
First, in my opinion the growth of charter schools in a good thing. In many of these charter schools, parents are much more involved. This alone is a very positive development. In addition, to this fact there is great attention to the difficulties of our public schools. The movie, Waiting for Superman, has helped to bring education into public discourse. We need to do something and we need to do it now.
Second, things are not all good though. As you know, we are in hard economic times. For this reason, there are budget cuts. This is a bad development. We need to support our teachers more, but there is less money to go around.
