A policy of both military and political nature that the US pursued in order to try and prevent the expansion of the Soviet Union specifically and communism in general.  It led to wars in Korea, Vietnam, all kinds of strange actions in Central Asia, South America, and Southeast Asia where the United States either crafted governments, propped up failing ones, or supplied resistance movements with weapons and cash and other assistance in order to fight against what was perceived as Soviet aggression.

The policy also led to massive expenditures on conventional and nuclear weapons in what has been labeled the "arms race" which likely ended up being the most effective as it led to the bankrupting of the Soviet economy which led to the political breakup as well.
