x + y = 11

3x +55y = 449

x = 11 - y

3(11 -y) + 55 y = 449

33 - 3y + 55y = 449

52y = 416

y = 8

x = 3

3 cars and 8 busses

Let B= number of Bus and C= number of Cars.

    B + C = 11

(Sum number of vehicles)

55B  + 3C =449

(People per cars and bus are number of student on trip.)

Multiplying by 55 the first equation we get:

55B + 55C = 605

Subtract the second equation from this:

52C =156  that shows  c=3

therfore: B = 11 - 3 = 8

Fact checking:    8 x 55 + 3 x3 = 449
