Assuming that this reaction proceeded to completion, describe the a method that could be used to separate the methyl salicylate product from the contaminating water.

The reaction of salicylic acid and methanol produces methyl salicylate and water. If you will notice the container where you did the reaction, the solution will not be homogenous. This means that methyl salicylate is not soluble in water. To separate the methyl salicylate with water, we can consider the boiling point of the solution. The boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius while that of the methyl salicylate is 222 degree Celsius. 

Placing the solution in a hot bath can make the water evaporate leaving the methyl salicylate in the solution.
