Candy and George are two characters in a very situation: both are responsible for looking after their 'best friend', respectively, the dog and Lennie.  The only freedom either can find is in the death of their respective best friends, however, the freedom is only superficial because the death of those friends will haunt them always. Candy is haunted by the fact that he was a coward, in his eyes, because he let someone else put his dog out of its misery by shooting it due to its old age and illnesses; George, however, will forever be haunted by the fact that he killed Lennie himself.  Even though it was the best thing George could have done, and in fact it was in keeping with his promise to take care of him (the decision was to either shoot him or risk the other men getting their hands on Lennie and severely hurting him, or even torturing/killing him).  However, this was still a difficult decision to make.  George knows it was the right thing to do, but that does not make it any easier.  The two men shared this responsibility for a long time, and now after the death of each they must endure the pain for what they  have done.
