1.  Nick is intrigued by Jordan's aloofness.  He feels like he recocognizes her from somewhere, but can't remember where.  He is attracted to her.

2.  Tom's brusque manner shows his aggressiveness and sense of superiority.  He speaks about matters that show his bigotry.  The telephone call from his mistress at dinner illustrates his sense of entitlement and selfishness.
