Dill, Scout, and Jem all spit on the gate to the back yard to stop it from squeaking. Then, Scout and Jem lift Dill to look in one of the windows but he can't see much. Jem crawls onto the back porch to look in the back window. They see a shadowy figure on the porch and run away. As they're running off, Mr. Radley fires his shotgun. Jem gets his pants caught in the gate and has to leave them there to get away. The children return to find Mr. Radley and the other adults talking after the commotion of the gun shots. Jem and Dill make up a story about playing strip poker to explain why Jem has no pants. Dill goes home and later that night, despite Scout's fear, Jem retrieves his pants.
