The stranger is Roger Chillingworth, Hester's supposedly "dead" husband. He has been traveling for many years abroad in Europe, and then traveled back to North America and was living among Native American tribes studying medicine. He arrives back in town with a Native American on the day that Hester is being shown on the scaffold for her sin.
